Kawamura Hanabishi - Kawamura Karyo

Playwright. Born in Ushigome, Tokyo. Real name Kyusuke. Graduated from Waseda University's Department of English Literature in 1910 (Meiji 43). After teaching at the Tokyo Acting School, he founded the Saturday Theatre at the Yurakucho Theater in 1918, then the New Japan Theater Company, and was also active in the field as a member of the scriptwriting department and showmanager at the Geijutsuza Theater. Later, he was mainly in charge of scriptwriting and directing for Shinpa plays, and supported Shinpa in the Showa period by training young actors. He placed emphasis on stage composition, audience psychology, and realistic dialogue, and wrote approximately 320 plays. His representative works include "Three Mothers," "After the Dew," "Distant Brother," and "The Three-Day Guest."

劇作家。東京・牛込の生まれ。本名久輔。1910年（明治43）早稲田(わせだ)大学英文科卒業。東京俳優学校の教師を経て、13年有楽座の土曜劇場、ついで新日本劇団をおこし、また芸術座脚本部員兼興行主事など実際面に活躍した。のちもっぱら新派の脚本・演出を担当、若い俳優を育成して昭和期の新派を支えた。舞台構成と観客心理、写実的な台詞(せりふ)を重視し、作品は約320編。代表作に『母三人』『露のあとさき』『遙(はる)かなる弟』『三日の客』など。
