〘Noun〙① Refers to the whole of old music, as opposed to new songs. Often used in the context _of koto music. ※Man'yoshu (late 8th century) 6/1011, title: " _Under reason, we all share _the old sentiments, and sing _together the songs _{of the Middle Ages} , so we like _this theme, and offer _two _verses of _an old song." [Bao Rong - A bitter expeditionary man]② (meaning old and rare music) A general term for the four schools of shamisen vocal music: Kato-bushi, Itchu-bushi, Ogie-bushi, and Miyazono-bushi. It is called this because fewer people know of them than Gidayu, Nagauta, Tokiwazu, etc. ③ A set of two koto songs, a front and back, composed by Yatsuhashi Kengyo by the time of the Jokyo era ( 1684-88 ). It is used in contrast to new songs composed after Genroku ( 1688-1704 ).

〘名〙① 新曲に対して古い曲全体をさす。多く箏曲などでいう。※万葉（８Ｃ後）六・一〇一一・題詞「理宜_下共尽_二古情_一同唱_中古歌_上故擬_二此趣_一輙献_二古曲二節_一」〔鮑溶‐苦哉遠征人〕② (古く珍しい音楽の意) 三味線声曲のうち、河東(かとう)節、一中節、荻江節、宮薗節の四流の総称。義太夫、長唄、常磐津(ときわず)などに比して知る人が少ないところからいう。③ 八橋検校(けんぎょう)が貞享（一六八四‐八八）までに作った表裏二組の箏曲の組歌。元祿（一六八八‐一七〇四）以後に作られた新曲に対していう。
