An annual plant of the Chenopodiaceae family. It grows in sandy areas where seawater floods during high tide. It is 15-30cm tall, lacks leaves, and has a deep green stem that turns deep red in autumn. Many branches grow from the stem, and the branches have many nodes. Three small flowers grow in each depression on either side of the internodes. In Japan, it was discovered on the Akkeshi coast of Hokkaido, where it was given this name, but it was later found to grow on the coast of Shikoku as well. It is also known as Yachisango and Hamamatsu. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
