Kitazawa Rakuten - Kitazawa Rakuten
Born: July 20, 1876 in Tokyo
[Died] August 25, 1955. Omiya manga artist. Raised in a wealthy family, he learned the basics of painting at the Taikokan art school run by Ohno Yukihiko. In 1894, he became a reporter for the English weekly newspaper "Box of Curious" in Yokohama, and honed his skills as an assistant to Australian cartoonist FA Nankebbell. Recognized by Fukuzawa Yukichi, he began drawing current affairs cartoons for the Sunday edition of the Jiji Shimpo in 1902, and, following the example of Hokusai Manga, began to actively use the word "manga". In April 1905, he launched Tokyo Pack, which criticized capitalism and sold 50,000 copies at its peak, continuing until 1911. In the early Taisho period, he published Rakuten Pack. He had many disciples, including Shimokawa Oten. After his death, his residence remains as the Saitama Municipal Manga Hall.
