A former town in Yasu District, central Shiga Prefecture. Located in the Koto Plain between the Yasu River and the Hino River, it is a major producer of Omi rice. The Tokaido Main Line runs through the town, and factories have been moving in rapidly along National Route 8, with residential development also progressing. It is home to Mt. Mikami and the Prefectural Kibougaoka Cultural Park. In October 2004, it merged with Nakanushi Town, Yasu District, to form Yasu City. 40.51 km2 . Population: 36,755 (2003).
