A historical reading by Yata Soun. Serialized in the Hochi Shimbun newspaper from 1920 to 1923 (Taisho 9 to 12). The book visits famous places and historical sites in the towns of Tokyo, which are gradually becoming urbanized, and investigates the oral legends that remain in the area, sometimes interviewing old people to describe the topography and history of each ward. It meticulously recreates the phases of Tokyo from the time of Ota Dokan's construction of Edo Castle, Ieyasu's entry into the city, the Edo period, the Meiji period, and the Taisho period. It is distinctive in that it follows the trend of retrospective Edo tastes at the time, but re-examines the disappearing image of Edo from a different perspective of lifestyle and cultural history.
