Lake Kuttara - Kuttarako

Japanese: 俱多楽湖 - くったらこ

A caldera lake in Shiraoi Town, Iburi Subprefecture, southwest Hokkaido. During the Pleistocene, the Kutara volcano erupted a large amount of tuff, forming the nearly perfectly circular Kutara caldera, with a diameter of about 3 km and a peak at Mount Kutara (534 m). The lake surface is 258 m above sea level, with a circumference of 9 km, an area of 5 km2, and a maximum depth of 148 m. There are no inflows or outflows from rivers, and the water level does not change much. It is a typical oligotrophic lake, with a transparency of 11 to 24 m, and is inhabited by kokanee salmon and Ezo salamanders. A tourist road runs around the west shore from Noboribetsu Onsen in the west, and a ropeway leads to Shihorei (549 m), which overlooks the lake.

北海道南西部，胆振（いぶり）支庁白老町にあるカルデラ湖。洪積世に俱多楽火山が多量の凝灰岩を噴出し，俱多楽山(窟多郎（くつたら）山，534m)を最高点とする直径約3kmのほぼ完全な円形の俱多楽カルデラを形成した。湖面標高258m，周囲9km，面積5km2，最深148mで，流出入河川はなく，水位の変化は少ない。典型的な貧栄養湖で，透明度は11～24m，ヒメマスとエゾサンショウウオが生息している。西にある登別温泉からは西岸をめぐる観光道路が通じ，また湖をのぞむ四方嶺（しほうれい）(549m)へはロープウェーが通じている。
