...It appears in the Arthashastra and means "head of ten villages." It appears frequently in historical documents from the Vijayanagar Empire period, and is thought to have existed with various characteristics, such as a title indicating "ruler of a nadu (district)," an official title of military and financial chief called Dandanayaka, or an Amaranayaka as a local feudal lord with tax and military powers. In particular, in the second half of the 16th century, as local powers in various parts of South India gained independence, semi-independent territorial systems were established in Tanjore, Ikkeri, Jingi, Madura, and other areas by the Nayakas who were granted fiefs in those areas. ...
