Spanish soprano singer. Born in Barcelona. Studied at the Barcelona Conservatory, she made her debut at the Basel Opera House in 1956. She appeared at the Vienna State Opera in 1958, La Scala in Milan in 1960, and the Metropolitan Opera in 1965, and has continued to perform at the world's leading opera houses ever since. Her repertoire is centered on Italian operas by Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi, Puccini, and Mozart. In 1975, she came to Japan for the first time as a substitute for Maria Callas, who had suddenly fallen ill, and sang "Tosca." She appeared with other Spanish singers at the opening ceremony of the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, adding a touch of glamour to the ceremony. Her voice was smooth and powerful, and she was blessed with a vocal quality and technique that did not fade even in pianissimo.
