Hagi City is located in central Yamaguchi Prefecture, facing the Sea of Japan. It was incorporated as a city in 1923. It is served by the San'in Main Line, and includes the Muto Islands, including Oshima, Mishima, and Sabashima. Located on the Abu River delta, the city was the political center of both Suo and Nagato provinces after Mori Terumoto built a castle on Mt. Shizuki (a natural monument) in 1600, and it produced many patriots during the late Edo period. The remains of the castle town (historic sites) are well preserved in Gofukumachi and other areas, including the remains of Hagi Castle, Shokasonjuku, Yubikan, the former home of Kido Takayoshi, and the former home of Ito Hirobumi (all historic sites). Meirinkan was the domain school of the Hagi domain. The main industry is tourism, but the development of a high-speed transportation network has lagged behind, and the number of tourists has been declining in recent years. It has a good port and is a thriving seafood processing area, with Natsumikan mandarins, Hagi ware, and bamboo products being its specialties. The coast and the Muto Islands belong to the Kita-Nagato Coast Quasi-National Park. In March 2005, the town of Tamanagawa, the town of Susa, the villages of Asahi, Fukuei, Kawakami, and Mutsumi in Abu County were incorporated. The area is 698.31 km2 . In 2015, the castle town was registered as a World Heritage Site as one of the constituent assets of the "Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution: Iron and Steel, Shipbuilding, and Coal Mining." The population was 53,747 (2010). Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
