1895‐1979 A Russian art historian and aesthetician. Born in St. Petersburg, he emigrated to Paris in 1924. In addition to his work on Byzantine art history, in his representative work The Fate of Art (1936) and in various essays from his later years, he believed that modern art no longer deserves to be called art, but is merely an aesthetic object, and criticized the modern avant-garde, which had become differentiated by placing emphasis only on form. He also said that the restoration of the wholeness of humanity and art was only possible through a connection with religion.
