Year of birth: Year of birth unknown. An official in the Nara period. Son of Ki no Kunimasu. From the time he was a Junior Sixth Rank in February 714, he participated in the compilation of the national history. In January of the following year, he was promoted to Junior Fifth Rank. He was highly renowned as a man of letters and was treated favorably as an academic. From January of 721, he lectured to the Crown Prince (later Emperor Shomu) together with Yamada Onkata, Yamanoue Okura, Rakuryou Kawachi, and Kinomoto. He served as Ukyo no Jo, Jibu Daifu and Bunsho Hakase, and Musashi no Kami, and was a Junior Fourth Rank at the time of his death. His father once had a dispute with Kinomoto over the ownership of slaves, and as a result of the trial in 744, the slaves became the property of Qing people. He submitted a petition to the emperor to make the slaves good citizens. His poems are found in Volume 17 of the Manyoshu, and he can be said to be a representative man of letters of this era.

奈良時代の官人。紀国益の子。和銅7(714)年2月,従六位下の時以来国史編纂に参加。翌年1月,従五位下。文人としての名声高く,学士として優遇された。養老5(721)年1月以来山田御方,山上憶良,楽浪河内,紀男人らと共に東宮(のちの聖武天皇)に進講した。右京亮,治部大輔兼文章博士,武蔵守を歴任し,死去のときは散位従四位下。かつて父が紀男人と奴婢の所有をめぐって争い,天平16(744)年裁判の結果,奴婢は清人のものとなる。彼は上表して奴婢を良民とした。『万葉集』巻17に作歌があり,この時代の代表的文人といってよい。
