Roman Emperor (reigned 68-69). One of the four emperors who came to power after the fall of Nero. In the spring of 68 AD, while he was governor of Tarraconensis, Spain, he raised an army in response to an anti-Nero uprising by Windex, governor of Lugdunensis, and was declared emperor by the Senate on June 8 of that year (Nero committed suicide the following day, June 9). He entered Rome with Otto, governor of Lusitania, in October, but he incurred the wrath of the Praetorian Guard for not paying his bonus, and the Germanic legions, who had already succeeded in subduing Windex, began to defect, supporting their commander, Vitellius. On January 15, 69, he was killed by the Praetorian Guard, who had allied with Otto. He is said to have been "everyone would have considered him fit to be emperor if he had not ascended to the throne" (Tacitus, Histories of the Ages).
