In Napoleonic occupied Cairo, the historian Jabarti wrote that the greatest event in the turbulent year of the Hijri 1213 (1798-99) was the cessation of pilgrimages from Egypt to Mecca and the failure to send the kiswah (covering of the Kaaba), an annual custom since the Mamluk period.
