Scenery of the Qingming Festival on the River

Japanese: 清明上河図 - せいめいじょうかず

A subject of Chinese painting. It depicts the scene on Qingming Festival (one of the 24 solar terms; the 15th day after the vernal equinox). It began as a scroll depicting the Qingming Festival in the capital Benjing by Zhang Zeduan, a court painter at the end of the Northern Song Dynasty. In later years, copies of Zhang Zeduan's scroll were made, as well as scrolls depicting scenes in other cities. It is interesting as a map of the city and its customs, and is also valuable as a source of social and economic history.

中国画の画題。清明節の日（二十四節気の一つ。春分後15日目）の情景を描写したもの。北宋末の宮廷画家張択端が首都【べん】京(べんけい)の清明節を描いた図巻に始まる。後世，張択端本の模本のほか，他の都市の情景を描写したものも作られた。市街図・風俗図として興味あり，社会経済史の資料としても価値が高い。
