Born: 4 February 1682, Schleitz, Thuringia Died March 13, 1719. Dresden, Germany. Alchemist and ceramist. Traveled among the noble families as an alchemist. In 1708, together with E. von Tschirnhaus, he succeeded in producing porcelain for the first time in Europe. In 1710, he became the factory manager of the Royal Saxon Porcelain Factory in Meissen (→ Meissen Porcelain), which was established by King Augustus of Saxony. He initially produced reddish-brown stoneware called vermilion, but later produced white porcelain. After his death, his disciples passed on the porcelain manufacturing method that he had kept secret to Vienna (→ Vienna Porcelain), and it quickly spread throughout Europe.
