Yoshiharu Iwamoto

Japanese: 巌本善治 - いわもとよしはる
Yoshiharu Iwamoto

Educator and critic. Born in Tajima Province (Hyogo Prefecture). His real surname was Inoue, and he was adopted by Chinese poet Iwamoto Kotojo (?-1903) at a young age. He studied under Nakamura Masanao and Tsuda Sen, and was baptized in 1883 (Meiji 16). He published Jogaku Shinshi in 1884, and launched a new Jogaku Zasshi in July 1885, contributing to the early women's liberation movement in Japan. In September of the same year, he was invited to become a teacher at Meiji Girls' School, which was founded by the couple Kimura Kumaji (1845-1927) and Tou (1848-1886). In 1885, he married Wakamatsu Shizuko, who later became known for her translation of "The Little Prince." In 1892, he became the principal of Meiji Girls' School, and put into practice a liberal idealistic education based on Christian faith, as described in "Our Party's Education for Women" (1892). After the school closed, he turned to business. His edited work "Kaishū Zadan" (1930) beautifully captures the image of a leader from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji era, as well as Kaishu's character, as told through the mouth of Katsu Kaishu. The violinist Iwamoto Mari is his granddaughter.
