Japanese pepper - Japanese pepper

Japanese: サンショウソウ - さんしょうそう
Japanese pepper - Japanese pepper
A perennial plant of the Urticaceae family that grows in the valleys of evergreen broad-leaved forests (illustration). The leaves are lined on both sides of the stem that creeps along the ground surface, and resemble the compound leaves of the Japanese pepper plant, hence the Japanese name. The stem branches and grows to cover the ground surface, 10-30 cm long, with short, spreading hairs that stand out. The leaves are small, 0.4-1.5 cm long. The closely related giant salamander P. radicans (Sieb.et Zucc.) Wedd. has larger leaves, 2-4.5 cm long, and the hairs on the stem are very short and inconspicuous.
