A biennial herb of the Brassicaceae family (APG classification: Brassicaceae). It has white soft hairs all over, a branched stem, and grows to a height of 30-70 cm. The leaves are stalkless, narrowly ovate, bipinnately lobed, and oblanceolate. Small flowers bloom in May and June with yellow, narrow, spoon-shaped petals. The siliques are narrowly linear. It is rarely seen in central Honshu, and is distributed in temperate Europe and Asia. It is said that the name comes from the likening of the finely lobed leaves to whale baleen.
