The area is located in the central part of Osaka City, in the area around Osaka Station in Kita Ward. Geographically, it is a back marsh of the Yodo River. The place was originally called Umeda because the marsh was filled in during the early modern period, and was named after the landowner Umeda Soan. At the time, it was a remote area in the northern suburbs of Osaka Sango, and Umeda Cemetery was located there. In 1874 (Meiji 7), a railway line was opened between the area and Kobe, and Umeda Station (Osaka Station) was established. Furthermore, in 1906 (Meiji 39), the Hanshin Electric Railway and in 1910, the Hankyu Electric Railway (originally Minoo-Arima Electric Tramway) were both terminal stations established. Transportation within the city was provided by streetcars (now defunct), buses, and subways, and it became a major transportation hub as the gateway to Osaka. It is commonly known as Kita. The JR Tozai Line was opened in 1997. Currently, redevelopment is underway in front of Osaka Station, with the North Gate Building (Osaka Station Shinkita Building) on the north side of the renovated Osaka Station and the South Gate Building (Osaka Terminal Building) on the south side. The surrounding area is lined with high-rise buildings such as Hankyu and Hanshin department stores, Osaka Maru Building, Umeda DT Tower, Shin Hankyu Building, Osaka Station Building (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th), Osaka Daiichi Life Building, Umeda Square Building, Hankyu Grand Building, Osaka Fukoku Life Building, Mainichi Broadcasting System (MBS) headquarters, and hotels, and is connected to underground shopping streets (Whity Umeda, Diamor Osaka, Hankyu Sanban-gai, etc.) to form a major urban center. In addition, Shin Umeda City, with its skyscraper garden observation deck (Umeda Sky Building) was created on the west side of the old JR Umeda Freight Station.
