An Indian thinker. Also known as Akapāda, his Chinese name is Sokumoku. He is considered the founder of the Nyāya school, one of the six schools of Indian philosophy. He is said to have compiled the Nyāya school of argumentation, which had been developing since the 5th and 6th centuries BC, from the standpoint of orthodox Brahmanism, and compiled the Nyāya Sutra, which consists of 5 volumes and 10 chapters (the extant version is thought to have been completed around the 3rd century). He established 16 principles, including the means and objects of knowledge, but since much of the philosophical foundation was borrowed from the Vaisheshika school, the two schools were later fused together.
