A city at the southern end of Chiba Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1939. It faces the Uraga Strait, with Cape Sunosaki jutting out from its western edge. The Uchibo Line runs through the city. The city center, facing Tateyama Bay (Kagamigaura), developed as a castle town and fishing port. It became a military city in the early Showa period, and a base for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force was established there after World War II. The ports of Tateyama and Funagata supply sardines for bait to bonito fishing boats, and seafood processing is also carried out. In rural areas, dairy cows are raised and vegetables and flowers are grown, taking advantage of the warm climate, but recently there has been an emphasis on tourism agriculture, such as flower picking and strawberry picking. It is the center of Minami-Boso Quasi-National Park, and the Boso Flower Line was opened in 1966. There are also a national vacation village and national lodging facilities. Area: 110.15 km2 . Population: 49,290 (2010). Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
