〘Noun〙① When one tries to take revenge on someone who has killed someone related to oneself, and is killed by that person instead. ※Ukiyo-zoshi, Koshoku Nidai-Otoko (1684), 7th paragraph : "Kakuya's final regret is that he met his enemy on his way back." ※Joruri, Hiragana Seisuiki (1739), 4th paragraph: "He should have fought back on the spot, but instead he watched and let go, due to the friendship that had been built up until that point." ② In the Edo period, when a master tried to kill a servant by hand, and was instead killed by the servant. In this case, the family line was cut off. ※Tekirei Mondo (Edogo), 3rd paragraph: "1. If you are killed in return, your family line will be cut off." ③ By extension, generally when someone tries to get revenge on someone, and is killed in return. ※Kakushihon, Hachishonin (1820-49), 1st paragraph: "No one's coming, you've been beaten back."

〘名〙① 自分と関係のある人を殺傷した相手に復讐をしようとして、逆にその相手に討たれること。※浮世草子・好色二代男（1684）七「角彌最後の残念は帰り討(ウチ)に逢と云」※浄瑠璃・平仮名盛衰記（1739）四「此場で返り討にすべきを、見遁すは今迄の誼(よしみ)」② 江戸時代、主人が下人を手討ちにしようとして、かえって下人に殺されること。この場合、家は断絶となった。※的例問答（江戸後）三「一、返り討に相成候得ば、家断絶に候事」③ 転じて、一般に、相手にしかえしをしようとして、逆にまたやっつけられること。※滑稽本・八笑人（1820‐49）初「誰も来ヤアしねへ。かへりうちをくらったな」
