Cournand (1895-1988), an American born in France, established right heart catheterization in 1941 by performing a cardiac catheterization of the right heart system from the systemic vein to the right atrium, right ventricle, and pulmonary artery (Forssman and Cournand were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine along with DW Richards in 1956). HAZimmermann performed a catheterization technique from an artery to the left ventricle in 1950, which was succeeded by SISeldinger's percutaneous arterial puncture technique in 1953, establishing left heart catheterization.
