The four ranks of government offices in the Taiho Code are the Chief (kami), Vice Chief (suke), Magistrate (jo), and Chief Licensor (sakan). Modeled on the Tang system, the characters used differed depending on the office, with Jingikan being written as Bo, Fu, You, and Shi, Sho as Kei, Fu, Jo, and Roku, Ryo as Tou, Suke, Yu, Zoku, and Bo as Shiki, Ryo as Daifu, Ryo, Shin, Zoku, Weifu as Toku, Sa, Wei, and Zhi, and Kokushi as Mori, Kai, Jo, and Me. The Chief was in charge of the affairs of the office, the Vice Chief assisted the Chief, Magistrates were in charge of supervising the office and inspecting official documents, and Chief Licensors were in charge of preparing official documents and submitting petitions. 『大宝令』における4階級の官司。すなわち,長官 (かみ) ,次官 (すけ) ,判官 (じょう) ,主典 (さかん) をいう。唐の制度に範をとり,その用字は官司によって異なり神祇官は伯,副,祐,史,省は卿,輔,丞,録,寮は頭,助,允,属,坊と職は大夫,亮,進,属,衛府は督,佐,尉,志,国司は守,介,掾,目などと記す。長官はその官司の事務を統轄し,次官は長官を輔佐し,判官は官司の取締りと公文書の検査,主典は公文書の作成,上申にあたった。時代が下ると,これに員外官,権官がおかれるようになった。
