...The first modern elevator in Japan was installed in 1890 at the Ryounkaku building in Asakusa; it was an electric elevator.

The basic structure of an elevator is a cage (carried by people and luggage) and a counterweight connected by a wire rope. This wire rope is wound around a sheave (rope pulley) of a hoisting machine installed in the machine room at the top of the elevator shaft, and operates like a bucket. The cage and counterweight move up and down, guided by guide rails attached to the wall of the elevator shaft.
