When seawater collected from all over the world is analyzed in this way, it is found that the amount of salt contained in seawater varies somewhat depending on the location and depth, but the concentration ratio of major elements is constant. This fact gradually became clear through the analytical results of chemists in the 19th century, and was largely established through research by D. Dittmar on seawater samples from various ocean areas obtained during the Challenger voyage in the 1870s.
