Ueda Hodou

...Tozan-ryu spread in a short time thanks to the vigorous activities of its founder and various innovations, and since the Taisho era it has become one of the two major schools of shakuhachi music, along with Kinko-ryu. In 1917, Ueda-ryu (founded by the first Ueda Hodo) split off from Tozan-ryu and became an independent branch in Osaka, and in the same year, Chikuho-ryu (founded by the first Sakai Chikuho) was born from a different branch of the Soetsu-ryu. The four schools, Kinko, Tozan, Ueda, and Chikuho, are the schools that have become commonplace in modern shakuhachi music, and of these, Kinko-ryu has a repertoire of ancient honkyoku and gaikyoku, while the other three have a repertoire of gaikyoku and new honkyoku unique to each school (including some classical honkyoku). ...
