As part of market research, a company measures the size of a market and determines its characteristics. In a broad sense, it can be used synonymously with market research. The content of a specific market analysis is centered on measuring demand and forecasting sales, and in this respect the relationship or difference with market forecasting is not necessarily clear.

Market analysis begins with an analysis of past sales. Then, it moves on to an analysis of the company's potential market and potential sales potential. This involves analyzing the current potential sales volume of the market, the size and characteristics of potential markets by region, market trends, etc. to arrive at a sales forecast, which forms the core of market analysis and is the basis for formulating a sales strategy. Methods for collecting the necessary information include compiling the forecasts of sales personnel, surveys of consumers, and management judgment, but these are supplemented with existing information from both inside and outside the company, and the final market information is derived through operations such as indexing, trend analysis, correlation analysis, multivariate analysis, and OR.
