…Before the Russian Revolution, women in northern and central Russia usually wore a sarafan, a skirt-like garment, over their rubashka, made of flax, while in southern Russia they wore a skirt called a ponyova under the rubashka. Girls had long hair braided and decorated with ribbons, and married women were required to cover their hair with a hat called a kichka or kokoshnik. However, from the end of the 19th century, elaborate hats were replaced by a simpler square cloth headgear called a platok, which remains in use today. …
