An evergreen coniferous tall tree of the Pinaceae family (classification based on molecular phylogeny: Pinaceae), endemic to Japan. Also known as Ermenegold and Nikko-momi. Larger trees can reach a height of 40 meters and a diameter of 2 meters. The bark is gray-brown, and on older trees it peels off in scale-like formations. The leaves are linear, with a round or concave head, 1.5-2.0 cm long and 2-3 mm wide, green on the upper surface, and two broad white stomatal lines on the underside. The plant is monoecious and blooms in May and June. The cones are oblong, cylindrical, 6-13 cm long and 3-4 cm in diameter, sessile, dark purple at first, and slightly yellowish brown when ripe in October. They can be distinguished from similar fir species by the lack of hairs on the twigs, the striking whiteness of the undersides of the leaves, the difference in the color of the cones, and the fact that the bract scales are shorter than the seed scales and do not protrude outward. It is found in the southern part of Fukushima Prefecture in Honshu, the Kii Peninsula, and the cool temperate zone of Shikoku. Its wood is used for construction, packaging, pulp, etc. The Japanese name comes from the fact that the undersides of the leaves are extremely white, similar to those of fir.
