Hokkokuji - Hokkokuji

Japanese:
Hokkokuji - Hokkokuji

Roads heading to Hokuriku or roads in Hokuriku. Corresponding to the Hokuriku Road (Hokuriku-do), an official road that connected the capital to Hokuriku in ancient times, the Hokuriku Road was the central road connecting Kyoto and Hokuriku even after the Middle Ages. With the establishment of the Tokugawa government, the shogunate established mileposts on the Hokuriku Road in 1604 (Keicho 9), and the Hokuriku Road and the main roads within its domain were developed with post stations and tree-lined streets by the Kaga and Fukui domains, but the Hokuriku Road was also called the Hokkoku Kaido (Hokkoku Kaido). This road is called Nishiomiji from Otsu along the west shore of Lake Biwa to Imajo-shuku in Echizen (present Minami Echizen Town, Fukui Prefecture), and Higashiomiji from Toriimoto-shuku on the Nakasendo (present Hikone City, Shiga Prefecture) along the east shore to Imajo-shuku. The Hokkoku Kaido, a Hokuriku road linking Edo and the Hokuriku region, connected Oiwake-shuku on the Nakasendo (present Karuizawa Town, Nagano Prefecture) to Izumozaki (present Izumozaki Town, Niigata Prefecture) via Takada in Echigo (present Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture), and also connected to the Hokuriku road at Takada. The Mikuni Kaido, which crossed the Mikuni Pass and connected Edo and Teradomari in Echigo (present-day Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture), was also an important highway on the Hokuriku route.
