Gottan Funei

A Rinzai sect monk who came to Japan during the Kamakura period. He was from Shu (Sichuan Province), China. He became a monk at a young age, visited Chizetsudochu (1169-1250) in Jiangshan, and succeeded the teachings of Wujinshihan at Ashoka Mountain. He became the first abbot at Lingyin Mountain in Hangzhou (Zhejiang Province) and Tiantong Mountain in Siming (Zhejiang Province), and stayed at Lingyan Temple in Xiangshan, but came to Japan in 1260 (Bun'o 1) due to the Mongol invasion. He stayed at Shofuku-ji Temple in Hakata and Tofuku-ji Temple in Kyoto, then became the second abbot of Kencho-ji Temple in Kamakura, where he established his Zen discipline, before returning to Song in 1265 (Bun'ei 2). He lived at Sorin-ji Temple in Wuzhou (Zhejiang Province) and Jiangxin Longxiang Temple in Wenzhou (Zhejiang Province), and passed away on November 24, 13th year of the Yuan Dynasty. His imperial posthumous name was Shugaku Zenji. He is the author of one volume of the "Gottan Nei Wajo Sayings."

鎌倉時代に来日した臨済(りんざい)宗の僧。中国、蜀(しょく)(四川(しせん)省)の人。幼くして出家、蒋山(しょうざん)の癡絶道冲(ちぜつどうちゅう)(1169―1250)に参じ、阿育王山(あいくおうざん)の無準師範(ぶじゅんしはん)の法を嗣(つ)いだ。杭州(こうしゅう)(浙江(せっこう)省)の霊隠山(りんにんざん)、四明(浙江省)の天童山(てんどうさん)の第一座となり、象山(ぞうざん)の霊巌寺(れいがんじ)にいたが、蒙古(もうこ)の侵入にあって1260年(文応1)来朝。博多(はかた)の聖福(しょうふく)寺、京都の東福(とうふく)寺に滞在し、ついで鎌倉の建長寺2世となって禅規を整え、1265年(文永2)宋(そう)へ帰国した。婺州(ぶしゅう)(浙江省)の双林(そうりん)寺、温州(うんしゅう)(浙江省)の江心竜翔(こうしんりゅうしょう)寺に歴住して、元の至元(しげん)13年11月24日示寂。勅諡(ちょくし)は宗覚禅師(しゅうがくぜんじ)。『兀庵寧和尚(ごったんねいわじょう)語録』1巻がある。
