…In contrast, crude candles were made by twisting a wick around a reed stalk to make a candle core, and pouring raw materials such as ox wax and whale wax into a cylindrical mold; this method was called “tsutsukake” or “gyoso.” Candles made at the time ranged from large ones called “sanhyakumekake candles” and “hyakume candles” to small ones called “kaishi candles” (also called “pocket candles”) and “goganji candles.” There were also “e candles” (also called “hana candles” or “nuri candles”), which had patterns of flowers and birds drawn on the surface of the candle and were painted in red, green, yellow, etc. “e candles” were known as a specialty of Aizu, and were mainly used for Hinamatsuri and Buddhist ceremonies. …
