Kaichi School

Japanese: 開智学校 - かいちがっこう

A school founded in the early Meiji period in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture. Modeled after Kaisei School in Tokyo, the Western-style school building was completed in 1876. It was used as the main building of Kaichi Elementary School until 1935, and was moved and restored to its current location in 1963 to become an educational museum. More than 100 years after its completion, the school building is recognized as a school building reminiscent of the Meiji Restoration period, and has been designated an Important Cultural Property by the national government.

長野県松本市，明治初期に創設された学校。東京の開成学校にならい，1876年に洋風の校舎が完成。その後，1935年までは開智小学校の本館として用いられ，1963年には現在地に移築・復元されて教育博物館となっている。完成後100年以上が経過した校舎は，文明開化期をしのばせる学校建築であることが評価され，国の重要文化財にも指定されている。
