Toriimoto
The name of a place in Sakata County, Omi Province. Currently in the area of ​​Hikone City, Shiga Prefecture. It is close to Toko Station on the ancient Tosando Road and Ono Station on the medieval Tokaido Road, and has long been a key transportation point connecting the Kinai region with the eastern and Hokuriku regions. In the Edo period, it was a post station on the Nakasen Road, and was a branch point of the Korean Highway that ran along the shores of Lake Biwa and the Hokkoku Highway that passed through Asai and Ika districts and led to the Hokuriku region. Around 1843, the townscape of the post town stretched from north to south, with 293 houses, a population of 1,448, one main inn, two side inns, five elders, five village headmen, four sidemen, two horsemen, and two porters. There were 50 people and 50 horses in the inn, and 35 inns (Yadomura Daigaicho). The Akadama Shinkyomaru, a stomach medicine specialty of the post town, was called the Akadama of Toriimoto and was known throughout the country along with the Toriimoto raincoat. Johonji Temple in the post town is the former site of Hokaibo Ryokai, famous for the kabuki play "Sumida River Continued," and is also known for the temple bell that was donated by courtesans from Edo's Yoshiwara.

近江国坂田郡の地名。現滋賀県彦根市域。古代の東山道の鳥籠(とこ)駅,中世の東海道小野駅に近く,古来畿内と東国または北陸を結ぶ交通の要所であった。江戸時代には中山(なかせん)道の宿駅が置かれ,琵琶湖岸を通る朝鮮人街道,浅井郡・伊香(いか)郡を経て北陸に通じる北国街道の分岐点となっていた。1843年頃の宿場の町並みは南北10町,家数293軒,人数1448人,本陣1軒・脇本陣2軒,年寄5人・庄屋役5人・横目役4人・馬差2人・人足肝煎2人などの役人がおり,宿建人馬は50人・50疋で,旅籠は35軒を数えた(《宿村大概帳》)。宿場名物の腹薬の赤玉神教丸は鳥居本の赤玉といわれて,鳥居本雨合羽とともに諸国に知られた。宿内にある上品寺は歌舞伎《隅田川続俤(すみだがわごにちのおもかげ)》で著名な法界坊了海の旧跡であり,また江戸吉原の遊女らにより梵鐘が寄進されたことでも知られる。
