Total Allowable Catch

Japanese: 漁獲可能量 - ぎょかくかのうりょう(英語表記)Total Allowable Catch
Total Allowable Catch
This defines the total amount that can be caught for each major type of fishing. It is abbreviated as TAC. It is also called the total allowable catch. Its purpose is to properly conserve and manage fishery resources. Based on the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, which came into force in 1994, Japan enacted the Act on Conservation and Management of Marine Living Resources (commonly known as the TAC Act) in 1996, and introduced the TAC system in 1997. As of January 2017, seven fish species are subject to the TAC system: Pacific saury, walleye pollock, horse mackerel, snow crab, Japanese flying squid, Japanese pilchard, mackerel, and mackerel and green mackerel. In January 2017, the Fisheries Agency decided to introduce the TAC system to manage Pacific bluefin tuna, which is at risk of extinction.
