Japanese: 軽井沢[町] - かるいざわ

A town in Kitasaku District, eastern Nagano Prefecture. In the early modern period, three post towns developed along the Nakasendo road: Oiwake, Kutsukake, and Karuizawa. After the Nagano Shinkansen was opened in 1997, the section of the Shinetsu Main Line between Karuizawa and Yokokawa was abolished, and the third-sector Shinano Railway runs between Karuizawa and Shinonoi. This plateau is located at an altitude of 1,000m on the southern foot of Mt. Asama. In 1886, British missionaries noticed it as a summer resort, and it has since developed as a summer resort and villa area, with Kyu-Karuizawa as its center. The summer population is several times the permanent population. There are hotels, golf courses, skating rinks, and other facilities, and hot springs such as Kose, Hoshino, and Shiotsubo are scattered throughout the area. The foot of Mt. Asama is part of Joshin'etsu Kogen National Park. Area: ^{156.03 km2} . Population: 19,018 (2010).

長野県東部，北佐久郡の町。近世，中山道の追分，沓掛(くつかけ)，軽井沢の３宿が発達した。1997年長野新幹線が通じた後，信越本線軽井沢〜横川間は廃止，軽井沢〜篠ノ井間は第三セクターのしなの鉄道が通じる。浅間山南麓の標高1000mの高原で，1886年英国宣教師が避暑地として着目，以後旧軽井沢を中心に避暑・別荘地として発展。夏の人口は常住人口の数倍に及ぶ。ホテル，ゴルフ場，スケート場などの設備も整い，小瀬(こせ)，星野，塩壺など温泉も点在。浅間山麓は上信越高原国立公園に属する。156.03km²。１万9018人（2010）。
