A winding that carries an excitation current in an electromagnet (also called a field magnet) used in generators. Usually, a self-excited system is used to power the excitation current by using the power generated by the generator itself. There are various winding methods, such as a shunt winding in which the field winding is connected in parallel with the generator coil, a series winding in which it is connected in series, or a compound winding that combines both. In a DC motor, the rotation speed can be controlled by changing the current in the field winding.
