Casein fiber is made from casein, a milk protein. The production of an artificial fiber similar to wool was successfully achieved in Italy in 1935, and was industrialized by the rayon manufacturer Sunia Viscosa, which still produces it today. Lanital is the company's product name, named after the Latin word lana, which means wool. Casein is dissolved in an alkaline aqueous solution and extruded from a spinneret into a coagulating bath containing sulfuric acid and formaldehyde, then spun into yarn.
