…Dao Xuan, who was descended from Huiguang at the beginning of the Tang Dynasty, lived in Zhongnan Mountain and wrote five major works on the study of precepts, including the Four Parts of the Vinaya Gyojisho, and founded the Nanshan Vinaya School. Meanwhile, Ho-li (569-635) wrote the Four Parts of the Vinaya Commentary and founded the Xiangbu School, and his disciple Huaisu (625-698) wrote the New Commentary on the Four Parts of the Vinaya and founded the Dongta School. Of the three schools, the Xiangbu School and the Dongta School soon fell into decline, and only the Nanshan Vinaya School flourished and was passed down until the Song Dynasty. …
