Lake Sagami

Japanese: 相模湖 - さがみこ
Lake Sagami
This is a former town area in the northwest of Sagamihara City, in the northwest of Kanagawa Prefecture. The northern half of the area is bounded by the Kanto Mountains, and the southern half by the Tanzawa Mountains, with the Sagami River running east through the center of the area. In 1955, the towns of Yose and Obara were combined with the villages of Chigira and Uchigo to form Sagamiko Town. In 2006, it was incorporated into Sagamihara City. There is little flat land, and most settlements are located on the river terraces of the Sagami River and its tributary, the Doshi River. Tourism is the main industry. The central area of Yose, along with Obara to the east, was a post town on the Koshu Kaido road in the early modern period. Sagamiko Lake attracts many day-trippers from Tokyo and Yokohama, and since it was used as the canoeing venue for the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games, a boathouse and other facilities have been developed. It is a famous fishing spot for Japanese crucian carp and smelt. The Bijodani hot spring is located in Sokozawa in the north, and the Suwara-arashi Stone Age Ruins, a nationally designated historic site, is located in the southeast. The Obara-juku Honjin remains today. Most of the area is part of the Jinba Sagami-ko Prefectural Natural Park.
