A village in Ito District, northeastern Wakayama Prefecture. Population 659 (1995). Located at the upper reaches of the Arida River, on the southern foot of Mount Koya, and bordering Nara Prefecture to the east. The area receives a lot of rain and produces high-quality cedar and cypress. In a major flood in 1953, 111 lives and one-third of the homes were lost, and the village was in danger of being abandoned, but it was later rebuilt. The Otamai rice-planting ritual that is handed down here has been designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property.
