…The Yellow River has been known since ancient times as a difficult place to navigate, with the two rock islands of Kamishima and Onishima in the middle of the river, the Renmen Peninsula jutting out from the north, and the narrow gorge splitting into three even narrower waterways, Renmen, Shenmen, and Onimon. The Onimon canal on the southern course is particularly dangerous, so during the Tang Dynasty a canal called Kaiyuan Xinhe was dug on the Renmen Peninsula, making navigation possible. The Sanmenxia Dam has now been built here to regulate the water volume of the Yellow River. …
