The capital of the province of Friesland in the north of the Netherlands. It was once a port town on the Middelsea (which disappeared due to reclamation that began in the 13th century). It received city rights in 1435. It became the capital of Friesland in 1504, and from 1582 to 1747 was the residence of the House of Orange, ancestors of the current Dutch royal family (whose heads held the position of governor of the seven northern provinces for many generations). From the 16th to 18th centuries, it was known as a center of gold and silversmithing in particular. Historic buildings such as the city hall (1724) and the weights and weighing house (1598) remain. Today, it has an important cattle market, and dairy products are produced there, as well as machinery, metal, woodworking, and paper products. Population: 86,405 (1992 estimate).
