Japanese: ハゲイトウ - はげいとう

An annual plant of the Amaranthaceae family native to tropical Asia whose leaves color beautifully from late summer to autumn (illustration). It was selected and bred as an ornamental plant from the edible Amaranth. The stems are thick and upright, growing to 1-2m, and bear many leaves, with the leaves at the ends of the branches coloring at the same time as the flower buds differentiate. During the coloring period, colors such as yellow, bright red, pale pink, and purple appear. The flowers are small and grow in large numbers in a globular shape in the leaf axils. The variant willow-leafed hawkweed (also known as narrow-leaved hawkweed) var. salicifolius Hort. is about 1m tall, with long, wavy, drooping leaves that are dark reddish purple.

夏の終りから秋にかけて，葉が美しく着色する熱帯アジア原産のヒユ科の一年草（イラスト）。食用にされるヒユから観賞植物として選抜育成された。茎は太く直立して1～2mになり，多数の葉をつけるが，花芽分化と同時に枝先の葉が着色する。着色期には，黄色，鮮紅色，淡紅色，紫紅色などの色彩があらわれる。花は小さく，葉腋（ようえき）に多数群がって球状につく。変種ヤナギバハゲイトウ(別名ホソバハゲイトウ)var.salicifolius Hort.は高さ約1m，葉は細長く波打って垂れ，葉色は暗赤紫色。
