Shigetomo Koda

Historian and economic historian. Born in Kanda, Tokyo on March 9, 1873. Younger brother of Koda Rohan. Graduated from the Department of National History at Tokyo Imperial University in 1896 (Meiji 29). From 1901 (Meiji 34) to 1909, he worked on compiling the "History of Osaka City." He made outstanding achievements in the economic history of the Edo period, especially the commercial history, urban history, and urban cultural history of Osaka and Edo. His books include "Oshio Heihachiro" and "Edo and Osaka." He also conducted pioneering research on the history of transportation between Japan and Europe, and translated Francois Calon's "The Great Kingdom of Japan." Posthumously, "Koda Shigetomo's Collected Works" (Chuokoron-Shinsha) was published. He passed away on May 15, 1954.
