Xochimilco (English spelling)

Xochimilco (English spelling)
Xochimilco is the administrative center of the Xochimilco region in the south of Mexico City, central Mexico. Before the Spanish conquest, it flourished as a lake city of the Aztecs, who grew fruit trees, vegetables, and flowers on floating rafts made of twigs and piled soil on top of them. These were called chinampas (floating gardens), but the roots of the plants eventually reached the bottom of the lake and the chinampas became fixed and became islands. As a result of reclamation of the area since the colonial period, only the small Lake Xochimilco remains to the north of the city, but the city has a labyrinth of canals, and boat tours of the canals attract many tourists. It is part of the Mexico City metropolitan area and is home to a branch of the Metropolitan Autonomous University. Along with the old town of Mexico City, it was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1987. Population: 217,481 (1980).
