Sotozan

Japanese:
Sotozan
This is the ancient name of Izusan Shrine, located in Izusan, Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture. Izusan Shrine is also called Izusan Gongen and Hashiriyu Gongen. It is said to be the guardian deity of Atami Onsen, and there is a theory that this shrine is the Homusubi no Mikoto Shrine, which appears in the Engishiki Jinmyocho. It was once located on Mt. Higane (currently at Jikkoku Pass on the border between Atami City and Kannami Town, Shizuoka Prefecture), and later the shrine was moved to Mt. Higane, called the main shrine, the new location was called Nakamiya, and the current shrine, which was moved again, was called Shinmiya. It is said that it was around this time that the shrine began to be called Izusan Gongen and Hashiriyu Gongen. There is a hot spring called Hashiriyu near the coast below the shrine, and it is believed that the source of this shrine was the union of the fire god of Mt. Higane and the hot spring god of this area. In the early Heian period, the honji suijaku theory led to the belief that the honji buddha was Senju Kannon. The Kamakura shogunate especially revered it as Nisho Gongen along with Hakone Gongen (present-day Hakone Shrine in Hakone Town, Kanagawa Prefecture). In the early Kamakura period, Mitsugon-in, one of the sub-temples of Jinguji Tomyo-ji, inherited the position of betto, and the position was temporarily changed from a Shingon monk to a Tendai monk, but then became a Shingon monk again, and then Sanbo-in of Daigo-ji Temple in Yamashiro Province took on the role of betto. The entire temple was burned down during Toyotomi Hideyoshi's Odawara campaign, but was rebuilt by Tokugawa Ieyasu. In the Edo period, the shrine's land (shuinchi) was 300 koku, and Hannya-in served as the betto. Following the separation of Shinto and Buddhism at the time of the Meiji Restoration, Hannya-in Temple was moved outside the precincts, where it remains to this day. In addition to the regular festivals, the temple also holds a bath offering ceremony.
