...Weapons are often associated with metal, but various weapons were used even in historical times. For example, the Athenian tyrant Peisistratos had a group of club-wielding soldiers guard his army. However, the most representative weapons in ancient times were the spear and the sword, and in the case of the Romans in particular, the spear, pilum, was a national weapon. Initially, Roman cavalry only carried spears.
